Christian boltanski “theatre d’ombre”

On this piece Christian Boltanski represents the collaboration between light and shadow demonstrating his work by shining a lamp on it and looking at the silhouette on the wall behind, two works of art in one. He gets his inspiration from the suffering of the holocaust as all of his work is mainly death related although because the metal sculptures are free to move their shadows often appear to be dancing in the light giving a sense of life to the work. I don’t particularly like his work, I like things to be down on paper and detailed, for me it’s a little chaotic but I do get the reasoning behind it he obviously tried to create something that was giving the feeling of a graveyard and because they looked like they were dancing it brought some life to the piece. This I think was mainly for the families to try and make their loved ones who had died in the holocaust live again. He managed to create these tiny delicate pieces to create quite a large statement that were once deathly but the shadows made them lively some of the faces have smirks on them maybe they were meant to be authoritive figures mixed in with the withering prisoners.

time lapse drawing on windows

On the windows I decided I would draw anything that came to mind though it also included some of the surrounding buildings being incorporated into it as well I then proceeded to draw mythical creatures like Godzilla and I also included SpongeBob as well. I later start drawing on flames as buildings are being torn down and set ablaze. It eventually got quite boring as I was struggling to find interesting things to draw so I eventually ended up with everything being on fire.

When I looked at peter Clark I found his work intriguing and it drew me in but after attempts at mimicking his work I discovered my hatred for this media as it made me frustrated me having to find pieces of newspaper or similar material to fit in to my design, and I hopefully will never have to work with this media again. I think it went well; I would’ve liked it to turn out better than it did and I would’ve liked to enjoy that part of the project if I did perhaps it would’ve been better.

The three animals I chose were a kitten, an owl and a sheep, I chose the kitten because like the kitten I can have sudden random bursts of energy and it’s usually when you least expect it, I chose the owl because I’m not a morning person I tend to be more alive at night and it is when I feel most comfortable. I chose the sheep because they tend to travel in herds and I don’t like being stuck on my own somewhere not having anyone to talk to. I would say I am most like the sheep I always try to have someone with me it could be like a survival instinct to have someone else with you in case anything went wrong so that they were there to help you out. Out of the three I chose the owl as I believed that I could draw it more accurately than the others, I then drew this animal in different styles e.g. silhouette, watercolour animated.

My final piece will be a 3d model as I believe it would be a better representation of an owl and be more effective to a viewer than it would be in 2d. I have created a basic card cut-out of my final piece to help me visualise what I’m going to do, I’m going to pile the cardboard for the eyes to make it more 3d and use the length of the cardboard to support the sides of the sculpture.

I’m unsure if I will improve my model making skills I believe that planning is key for something like this so if I keep to my plan I should get the results I expected on this project I think I handled my time management well although I could’ve spent more time on my pieces but I think it’s because I didn’t really enjoy this project that much. Although I discovered on this project I don’t really like collage I think overall it went pretty well.
