evaluation arts and crafts

Evaluation arts and crafts

I didn’t use any primary research all my photos were secondary this included books on the arts and crafts movement which also included several other artist works besides Morris and Mackintosh, I also got some of my research from Pinterest and Google images because there were  a wider variety of images to choose from. On my mood board I decided to study both of their works because I like them both Mackintosh because of how he uses lines in his glass windows, and Morris because of the way he portrays and colours his flowers on his pieces.
I don’t think my contemporary artist really supported my theme because his media was portraits in a graphite pencil but at the time I thought it would be a good idea to study him to improve my drawing skills in this project. The experimentation I used included puff binder, I had to paint it on some card in a particular pattern and heat it with a heat gun as it rose. Mark making was where I had to use different objects to create different patterns like a sponge or a fork.  I also studied batik which involved using hot wax to mark out our drawn design with a device called a tjanting, when the wax cooled we coloured it with ink then after the ink dried we melted the wax with the iron. We also experimented with weaving and sewing, I enjoyed weaving on the peg loom as it was far easier than a cardboard loom as I had to use a plastic needle to weave in and out of the cotton. The sewing I didn’t enjoy at all as each time I tried to pierce the paper all the holes would often make one big hole.
The health and safety in workshop varied it was mainly to have your goggles on and hair tied back but in certain workshops we also had to sign in and wear aprons we also had to be careful when using the heat gun we had to keep our hands away from the nozzle and we also had to make sure we didn’t set the paper on fire with it. Also when using the sewing machine we had to be careful where we placed our hands so the needle didn’t impale your hand.
When I received the feedback on my work I was told to add more colour to my mood board In my drawings so I did which makes that piece look more fuller and more vibrant, I also developed the shading on my contemporary critical study. The strengths to my work are that I believe my composition, my painting skill and my painting skill.
If I had to redo this work again I would definitely handle my time management better I think I would benefit from better time management. I didn’t like batik experimental work it wasn’t easy and soon became messy after a few strokes of wax. I think my contemporary critical study was some of my best portrait work although I could’ve improved on it I also enjoyed working on the portraits too. Also as I explained before my time management wasn’t on point and I had to rush toward the end which didn’t improve my artwork.

weaving

the weaving on a peg loom i found quite easy and i also enjoyed it i didnt like weaving on a cardboard loom though as it required a needle to go in and out of the cotton and it was quite fiddly.
At the end we had to make sure the strands were tied it was more complicated to do that on the peg loom as we had to pull the pegs up and over to cut the strands and tie them. the first three strands and the last three tie together whereas the rest of them are only tied to one other.

experimental

The mark making was fun although i prefer working with precision; we had to use what was at hand rather than a paintbrush. I used a sponge a fork and a spatula to create this effect.

Batque was quite difficult I was using hot wax which I had to control to go in certain areas and it would often go out of the lines, painting was easier because it wouldn’t go out of the wax lines.
Its drying time was the worst thing about this piece as it connected in one area because it was so watery.

This I found quite easy because I was basically painting, I had to use this white adhesive to paint on my design so that when I heated it up it would rise from the paper which made it look and feel like foam.

metal work

In metalwork we did embossing, etching, piercing out, annealing and 3d pieces.
I started with embossing which meant I had to anneal (heat up) the copper so it would be more bendy for me to roll through with a texture to make it emboss.
I then used stop out to draw on a design so that when I placed it in the acid the stop out would prevent it from affecting the design, I then cleaned it with wire wool so it was shiny.
On the third piece of metal I covered it in stop out and scraped off the design so it would have the opposite effect to the brass metal, unfortunately it didn’t turn out so well.
On the fourth piece of metal I cut pieces of duct tape on it and placed it in the acid and I also cleaned it with wire wool afterwards.
i enjoyed using the rollers and the torch, the acid after a while would give me a headache so i didnt enjoy using that i enjoyed using the devise that created a dome because when they came out they reminded me of bolts.

objects on black paper

With my first lesson with claire i did this as part of my project i think it couldve gone better, i dont like the bottle or the duck but i do like the feather i think i got the right colours in there and it also looks like a feather which is great.

mixed backround

On my mixed media background project I had to draw on ink, white paint as a textured background, different types of paper and brusho drawing with bleach.
On the brusho background it was quite difficult because I knew I had only one try but the bleach was very effective as it removed the brusho from the paper leaving a white outline.
The white paint background was very difficult also as it didn’t easily allow the coloured pencil to be embedded in it so I had to go over it several times.
The ink was easy to draw on but I had to place my objects carefully so it would fit in.
The paper background was the most difficult because the different papers had different textures so the newspaper and the parcel paper wouldn’t allow the pencil to mark whereas the black paper would allow it.

still life

still life

When creating this piece I had to have my proportions just right which was difficult to do, the shading was quite difficult as I needed to show my objects were at a distance from one another. What I don’t like about this piece is how light it looks I would’ve preferred it to be more bold. Something I like about this piece is that it defines each object like on the toolbox I especially like the hinges.
