vintage project evaluation

Vintage project evaluation

The era I chose to study was the 1940s, when I first decided to research the 1940s I wanted to look into world war two and other aspects of it. Although I have looked into several other things like fashion, food, cartoons, other artists, several celebrities, transport, hairstyles, songs and jewellery. I have chosen to focus on fashion for the remainder of my pages.
at that time there was a war taking place in the 1940s so there wasn’t much going on at the time certain things had to be sacrificed and if you wanted to buy anything you needed to really save up for it or collect enough coupons to buy it, the 40s were a time of rationing. The artists that were around in the 40s that I chose were Matisse, Picasso, Wassily Kandinski and Salvadore Dali, I chose these artists because I found their work interesting their style is mainly expressive and they used loose strokes when painting and almost all use oil paint. The media I have used is mainly pen, pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour and paint, I used this media because they are what I consider to be the media I work best with and I wanted to make it look as best as it could although I wish I could’ve found  way to put different media in as well.
My annotations aren’t very creatively displayed but I think I put everything I could think of in them it would’ve been better if they were presented more creatively but I am happy with what I have produced. I don’t think I have handled my time management well I would’ve preferred it if I had more time to make my sketchbook more presentable and clearer instead it is more rushed.
I think that I am satisfied with my sketchbook overall there are a few things I would like to do better like have better presented annotations on my work and I believe I could’ve not rushed things as much as I have but overall I am happy with what I have accomplished including the Marilyn Monroe picture that I drew I am very happy with that.

zoetrope

Zoetrope

Originally developed in the 1930s the zoetrope was a large source of entertainment as televisions were scarce among families. The zoetrope is a cylindrical devise with vertical strips in the side the devise is spun and you view the picture through the slits and it appears as though the picture is moving but it is essentially like a flipbook the images are relatively the same apart from a small amount of movement per picture.

jonathan borofsky

Jonathan Borofsky “molecule man”
Bild01
Bild04On this piece Jonathan Borofsky tells a story of the human race coming together to create one existence. He demonstrates that humans are mostly made up of water and air and the three people colliding give an impression of not only atoms joining together but people too to create a community. He has placed several of these sculptures all over the first in la then Yorkshire then Berlin and then Council Bluffs including some indoor versions. I like how he makes something large to go with a large statement although I’m not entirely sure what the story behind it is I feel like there is something missing or if he’s trying to say something different, explaining perhaps we are all empty and hollow but we come together to change that by building a structure, we are what we make of it that sort of thing. I don’t like his work because I find it difficult for a story to come across in sculpture form there are instances where it does work for me but I don’t see it that much on this piece although I do like it as a monument I think it would be good for it to become part of the country’s history and heart.

christian boltanski

Christian boltanski “theatre d’ombre”

On this piece Christian Boltanski represents the collaboration between light and shadow demonstrating his work by shining a lamp on it and looking at the silhouette on the wall behind, two works of art in one. He gets his inspiration from the suffering of the holocaust as all of his work is mainly death related although because the metal sculptures are free to move their shadows often appear to be dancing in the light giving a sense of life to the work. I don’t particularly like his work, I like things to be down on paper and detailed, for me it’s a little chaotic but I do get the reasoning behind it he obviously tried to create something that was giving the feeling of a graveyard and because they looked like they were dancing it brought some life to the piece. This I think was mainly for the families to try and make their loved ones who had died in the holocaust live again. He managed to create these tiny delicate pieces to create quite a large statement that were once deathly but the shadows made them lively some of the faces have smirks on them maybe they were meant to be authoritive figures mixed in with the withering prisoners.
